Does your child have learning difficulties?

Learning disorders affect 5-15% of children.

Learning difficulties can affect a range of skills needed for school. There are two specific learning disorders that impact on literacy. If a child has a specific learning disorder that impairs their ability to read, formerly known as dyslexia, this means they experience difficulty learning to read and spell. If they have a specific learning disorder that impairs their ability to write, formerly known as dysgraphia, this means the student can have difficulty with handwriting, spelling and getting their thoughts onto paper.  For numeracy there is only one specific learning disorder that causes difficulty working with numbers, it has previously been known as dyscalculia. Children with learning difficulties can have a low self-esteem which can put them at an increased risk of experiencing depression and anxiety.  Counselling can help support students with learning difficulties to build their self-esteem, work with them to develop coping strategies for anxiety or can include traditional therapy if they are experiencing depression.
