Behaviour, Distress and Co-Regulation Support
Behaviour is often a form of communication. When children are distressed, overwhelmed, avoidant,
withdrawn, or having big reactions, it can be a sign that something is too hard, too much, unclear,
unsafe, or unsupported. Rather than seeing behaviour as the problem, we can work together to
understand what the behaviour is communicating.
Support may include identifying triggers, recognising sensory and emotional needs, developing co-
regulation strategies, strengthening communication, and helping adults respond in ways that reduce
stress and build safety.
